The Swedish furniture giant has been busy developing its large-scale site at Auckland’s Sylvia Park shopping mall, after signing a deal for 3.2 hectares of land.
Now it has finally revealed an opening date. December 4, 2025, is when Kiwis will be able to step through the door of the huge 34,000 m² new store.
Like those overseas, the store will feature an expansive showroom filled with fully styled room sets from bedrooms and kitchens to outdoor spaces. A market hall area will be stocked with curated home accessories, and a self-serve warehouse is where customers will pick up larger flatpack furniture to take home that day, or via home delivery at a more convenient time.
The space will have the huge array expected, as well as food options including the famous IKEA meatballs, salmon dishes, plant-based favourites, and even some meals exclusive to New Zealand. They will be available across three food operating units: the Swedish Bistro, the Swedish Restaurant, and the Swedish Food Market.
The company has also confirmed IKEA will be introducing their loyalty program ‘IKEA Family’ to New Zealand, with registration open now. The program includes special offers events and discounts.
In order to showcase some of the more than 7,000 products the mega-brand will be bringing to our shores, IKEA will be greeting Aucklanders with a presence at the upcoming Auckland Home Show, from 11–14 September.
Beyond the opening date, new details have been confirmed bout how those around the country will get their hands on Ikea’s items.
Ikea New Zealand will operate an online store and app for orders and will offer a delivery across the country. The company has confirmed it will be partnering with Mainfreight and NZ Post as its logistics partners, helping to move purchases of the brand’s homewares and famous flatpack furniture to shoppers father afield.
NZ Post will handle smaller items while Mainfreight will help with bulkier pieces like bookcases and sofas. In addition, there will be 29 Mainfreight-operated ‘pick-up points’ across the country for selected Ikea items ordered online.
Each Pick Up Point will have dedicated parking and drive-in lanes for quick collection and are situated in major centres including Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin as well as smaller regional towns such as Kaitaia, Greymouth, Invercargill.
The opening of the big box retailer has been hotly-anticipated since the company began construction on the Sylvia Park site began in June 2023. The company also opened a 20,000m² warehouse in December 2024.
In a dedicated official Instagram page for Ikea NZ, details on what Kiwis can expect from the retail line-up has been sparse. However fun teaser clips have included some Kiwi influencers using the brand’s recognisable blue carry bag and videos showing what the roles on Ikea staff in Australia involves in a big to encourage locals to apply for roles at the soon-to-open store.
As of 25 May, 15,000 New Zealanders had applied for advertised roles, highlighting the strong interest in jobs with the world’s largest home furnishing retailer. Last month, Ikea NZ said it had so far employed 85 of the 500 staff it needed.
Recruitment for roles span a wide range of departments, including the on-site restaurant, and workers can expect to be supported by inclusive policies and a strong commitment to work-life balance according to IKEA NZ.
