Terri Irwin has revealed late husband Steve left her feeling "crushed" by a trick he played on her when they first met.

Steve Irwin really was as cheeky as we all remember him.

Terri Irwin has recalled the first time she met her late husband – which didn’t get off to the start she was hoping for.

Terri was married to the love of her life Steve for 14 years before he was tragically killed by a stingray in 2006.

Steve had become a major global celebrity as the Crocodile Hunter, fronting several TV series and films before his untimely death.

And now, in an interview with US Weekly, the 55-year-old recalled the first time they ever met.

An American-born conservationist, Terri had been visiting Australia Zoo in Queenstown when she first came across Steve.

Having already taken a liking to him, she says she was left “crushed” when Steve said to her, “Would you like to meet my girlfriend?”.

Terri revealed that Steve may have sensed she was angling to ask if he had a better half, and Terri admitted she didn’t know how to ask the question.

“I just felt utterly crushed, I was like ‘yeah that’d be really fun’. And so he called out ‘hey, Sue, hey Suey,’ and here comes this little dog, Suey.”

So no girlfriend, just a pet dog. Call it puppy love.

Steve and Terri went on to enjoy a happy marriage and had two children together, Bindi and Robert.

The charming story that Terri revealed lives on with Bindi, who shares the middle name Sue with the family dog.

In July, the 21-year-old got engaged to wakeboader Chandler Powell.

Like her parents, they too met at the exact same zoo.

Last month, Bindi revealed they would be marrying at her home in Australia Zoo at some point next year.

“Wedding planning is in full swing for us and it has been an amazing whirlwind,” she said in an Instagram post of herself and Chandler posing with a koala.
