Actress and producer Furness and stage and screen actor Hugh Jackman married in 1996. The Australian couple had a nearly three decade marriage, before announcing their separation in 2023.
This week it was reported court documents submitted in New York on May 23 reveal, Furness, 69 has officially filed for divorce from Jackman, 56. The filings indicate the terms are uncontested and will only need a sign-off from a judge, according to reports.
Now, Furness has shared a statement revealing her thoughts on the significant move and the impact the split has had.
“My heart and compassion goes out to everyone who has traversed the traumatic journey of betrayal,” the actress said in a statement provided to People and the Daily Mail.
‘It’s a profound wound that cuts deep, however I believe in a higher power and that God/the universe, whatever you relate to as your guidance, is always working FOR us,” Furness said.
She continued: “This belief has helped me navigate the breakdown of an almost three-decade marriage. I have gained much knowledge and wisdom through this experience. Even when we are presented with apparent adversity, it is leading us to our greatest good, our true purpose.”
She says the experience can hurt, but she found liberation and freedom in “returning to yourself and living within your own integrity, values and boundaries.”
Furness shared the “one thing” she’s learned is “that none of this is personal.”
“We are all on our individual journeys and I believe that the relationships in our lives are not random. We are drawn to people, we invite them in, in order to learn our lessons and to recognise and heal the broken parts of ourselves…I remain grateful,” she concluded.
After meeting in 1995 on the set of the Australian TV series Corelli, the couple wed the following year. They share two children, a son Oscar and daughter Ava.
After revealing their split in a joint statement to People in 2023, the pair initially shared the move was amicable, announcing, “We have decided to separate to pursue our individual growth. We undertake this next chapter with gratitude, love, and kindness. ”
Jackman has since been romantically linked with his former Music Man costar, actress Sutton Foster.
