How to transform your wellbeing in 2023

How to transform your wellbeing in 2023
MiNDFOOD looks at small lifestyle tweaks that will have a big affect on your health and wellbeing in 2023.

As we let out a collective sigh saying goodbye to 2022, now is a great time to start considering ways in which you can make 2023 your best year yet. And while New Year’s resolutions might seem like a great way to set goals for the year ahead, it’s believed that by February a whopping 80% of people have failed to stick to theirs.

And so, rather than compiling a list of achievements that you want to tick off during the new year, instead think about embracing new habits that will help transform your life in 2023. From pledging for some time away from your phone to honing a healthy morning routine, here are ten simple ways in which you can help improve your wellbeing in 2023.

Create a healthy morning routine

Creating a healthy and consistent morning routine is key to easing the transition between wake and sleep, and setting yourself up for a productive and fruitful day ahead. If you can face it, try waking up half-an-hour earlier than you’re used to; the benefits of waking up early include improved mental fitness and better sleep quality, and it will give you extra time to develop healthy morning habits – such as journaling, eating a healthy breakfast, and much more besides.

Invest in rest

While many like to live by the mantra of ‘I’ll sleep when I’m dead’, the long-term effects of sleep deprivation are real. Science has linked a lack of shut-eye with a wealth of health problems, from memory issues to weight gain and a weakened immune system. Whether investing in a weighted blanket – known for promoting better sleep – or sleeping with your electronic devices in a different room, make 2023 the year that you look after your sleep health, and you’ll reap the benefits.

Schedule screen-free time

We live in a day and age where many of us are tied to our phones, and the amount of screen time that has become the norm is alarmingly high. Much has been reported on the dangers of too much screen time – from poor sleep to strained eyes, blurred vision and headaches – so start carving out some time away from your screen every week. The benefits will be immediate, and you’ll notice everything from an improvement in your sleep to a greater increase in productivity and focus.

Go meat-free

If you don’t want to commit to going entirely meat-free, try incorporating a meat free Monday into your weekly routine. As well as lowering greenhouse gas emissions, meat-free Mondays are also budget friendly and can help promote a decreased risk of diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure.

Shop ethically

Make 2023 the year that you pay attention to where you shop. Consuming ethically can help improve conditions for both animals and workers, and being a conscious consumer and knowing where the things you buy are sourced from is a great habit to adopt at any time of the year.

Meditate

The benefits of meditation are well known and wide reaching, so if it’s a practice you’ve been putting off, it’s a great habit to adopt with the start of the new year. Whether you use an app, opt for guided meditation, or simply carve out some time every day to sit still and focus on your breathing, you can expect a reduction in stress levels, better emotional health, and enhanced self-awareness.

Embrace nature

With an abundance of beautiful beaches, and unrivalled access to some of he most beautiful outdoor spaces in the world, people living in Australia and New Zealand are spoilt for choice when it comes to getting out into nature. If spending time in the great outdoors isn’t already part of your weekly routine, set aside an hour or two each week to do exactly that and enjoy improved lung and heart health, lower stress levels and more energy.

Hydrate

We all know we should be drinking about 2 litres of water a day, but studies show that most of us are falling well below the target. Drinking fluids is crucial to staying healthy and maintaining the function of every system in your body, including your heart, brain, and muscles, so buy yourself a reusable drinking bottle, and be sure to refill it a few times a day. Try adding slices of cucumber or orange for added flavour.

Have an attitude of gratitude

Practising gratitude should be a daily habit everyone puts into practise – not only does it increase emotional resilience, it’s also been linked to a better immune system and increased levels of happiness.

Practise random acts of kindness

Whether buying a cup of coffee for a stranger or volunteering at your local homeless shelter, get into the habit of practising random acts of kindness. Other than simply knowing you’ve done a good deed for someone else, science stipulates a huge range of astonishing health benefits, from fuelling energy and esteem to helping you live longer and lowering blood pressure.
