How to recreate Janelle Monae’s Oscars look – including that perfect eyeliner

We can concede that beyond the talent being celebrated at the Academy Awards, the fashion is the second most talked-about topic.

But in terms of looks the rest of us can take inspiration from, the beauty looks worn by the celebrities to accompany those stunning Oscars outfits are certainly up there.

So when news trickles out about which products were used and how, we’re all ears.

One Oscars look in particular had us entranced.

Multi-hyphenate star Janelle Monae stole the show in a two-piece custom Vera Wang outfit complete with jewelled choker.

Monae’s makeup artist Keita Moore created a makeup look that was at once dramatic and understated, the perfect complement to her stunning tangerine and black gown.

Inspired by iconic black beauty icons of the ’60s, Monae’s makeup look featured bronzed, peachy-toned skin, luxury lashes, a statement eye and a gently contoured, glossy nude lip.

The star of the look was undoubtedly Monae’s eyes, that Moore defined with an exaggerated winged eyeliner, but the balance of the look was perfectly understated.

Using NARS products, these are the steps Moore used to create the look:

COMPLEXION
To create gorgeous glowing skin, start with a mix of Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation in the shades Marquises and Zambie. Highlight under the eyes and high points of the face with Radiant Creamy Concealer in Walnut. Set the complexion with Soft Matte Advanced Perfecting Powder in Seafront and High Tide.

BROWS
Fill in brows where needed with Brow Perfector in Lava.

EYES
Using the Orgasm Rising Eyeshadow Palette, apply shade Push It on the lids and Hotwired on the inner corners of the eyes.

To create a cat eye, use Climax Liquid Eyeliner on the top lid and High-Pigment Longwear Eyeliner in Gran Via on the bottom lash line. Top the lashes with Climax Extreme Mascara for added volume.

CHEEKS
For a sun kissed look use Bronzing Powder in Punta Cana on the cheek bones. Then, add a combination of Blush in Amour and Orgasm Fourplay Blush Quad.

LIPS
Outline lips with Precision Lip Liner in Spunk and then fill in with Afterglow Lip Balm in Laguna.
