Forget about spring cleaning: a change of seasons is the perfect time to think about overhauling your wardrobe.

Forget about spring cleaning: a change of seasons is the perfect time to think about overhauling your wardrobe. Because there’s never a bad time to organise your wardrobe, we’ve rounded up our top tips for clearing out your wardrobe and making the most of the garments you love and wear often.

Out with the old

While it can be tempting to hold onto garments that you haven’t worn in quite some time, it’s very unlikely that you’re going to start wearing items that you haven’t worn in a year or so. Getting rid of old pieces that haven’t seen the light of day for many months is one of the easiest places to start when overhauling your wardrobe. Apply the same rule to garments that are either too big or too small or bought on a whim – or more likely a sale.

Spend some time getting organised

If you happened to stumble across some favourite pieces that you thought you had misplaced will doing your wardrobe tidy up, now is the perfect time to pay attention to how you organise your wardrobe. Spend a little time doing this now and you’ll find getting dressed each morning much easier. Start by organising your garments by category – for example, group all dresses together – and then by colour.  Investing in quality coat hangers and wardrobe organisers will help you keep on top of your wardrobe too.

Take care of precious pieces

We’re much more aware of the impact that our fashion consumption has on the planet therefore it’s important to take care of your garments so they stand the test of time. Keep your prized possessions in dustbags and out of sunlight to ensure you’re able to cherish them for a lifetime rather than just a season.

Give your pre-loved clothes a second chance

Donating clothes to charities in need is a great way to ensure your pre-loved garments get a second lease of life. However, it pays to check in with the charity you plan on donating to first, as many are often inundated with goods that they are unable to find homes for. Call ahead rather than passing on your problem to someone else.

Consider hosting a wardrobe swap

Chances are that now you’ve given your wardrobe a good clear-out you’ll be looking to fill some gaps with some new pieces for the coming season. Instead of rushing out to buy something new just for the sake of it, consider hosting a clothing swap with your friends. Set up an Instagram or Facebook page dedicated to your wardrobe finds that you’re ready to part with and encourage friends to do the same.

Now that you’ve cleaned up your current wardrobe here’s how to go about shopping for new pieces in a more mindful way.
