It’s a frustrating reality that even the most natural red carpet hair look probably took a fair amount of elbow grease, not to mention an expert glam team.
Regardless, we’ve always admired the polished yet natural-looking waves Rose Byrne always has.
The Australian actress, who currently features as our cover star and inside MiNDFOOD’s latest issue, has our dream bob.
The mid-length style is bang on trend and looks fresh and uncontrived. It helps that she appears to have thick hair, something not all of us are blessed with, but when her hair artist shares his styling steps, we are all ears.
At the recent Tony Awards Byrne’s long-time hairstylist Harry Josh created an effortlessly chic do to complement her stunning beaded Prada dress. Respected makeup artist Hung Vanngo was responsible for her makeup look, which concentrated on accentuating her eyes with liner and lashes, paired with a caramel lip liner and gloss.
The star was enjoying her first nomination at the prestigious awards honouring American theater performances, acknowledged in the category for Best Leading Actress in a Play for her role in Fallen Angels. Though she didn’t win, (Lesley Manville won for her role in Oedipus) the moment made her one of only 34 performers to earn both a Tony and Oscar nomination in the same year. She was nominated at the 2026 Academy Awards for best actress for her role in If I Had Legs I’d Kick You.
The hair look
For that modern textured hair look, Josh had Byrne wash her hair with Goldwell Curls & Waves Shampoo and Curls & Waves Conditioner, for a deeply hydrated foundation that enhanced the hair’s natural texture.
After rough-drying, he generously sprayed the Goldwell StyleSign Everyday Blow-Dry Spray, to deliver heat protection and lightweight control. He also applied the Goldwell StyleSign Root Boost Spray at the roots to create subtle lift and add extra volume.
Once the hair was fully dried, hair was given those gentle waves using a curling iron, alternating the direction of each section to create relaxed, haphazard waves with a lived-in texture and dimension.
To enhance the shape and keep that look in place he used Goldwell StyleSign Shaping & Finishing Spray. For the final touch, a small amount of Goldwell StyleSign Weightless Shine-Oil was run through the ends, adding a luminous finish without weighing the hair down.
The makeup look
Makeup artist Hung Vanngo ensured a flawless canvas by using two gently exfoliating products on Byrne’s skin in preparation: First Aid Beauty’s Brighten + Glow Exfoliating Gel Cleanser and Brighten + Glow Facial Radiance Pads. Then, skin was hydrated with First Aid Beautyt’s Ultra Repair Cream Intense Hydration.
Vanngo used his eponymous makeup line, famously known for its bold blushes, to apply Byrne’s look. He sculpted the face with Tansculpt Bronzing Contour Balm and Very Beautiful Matte Velvet Blush in rose pink to finish her cheeks. The foundation he used wasn’t revealed, but Vanngo teased it is ‘coming soon.’
Eyes were defined by Hung Vanngo Beauty Longwear Waterproof Precision Gel Eyeliner in both black (upper line) and brown (lower lashes), finhsed with lashes and mascara.
Lips gained a luscious shiny finish with lip trio. The liner was Accentuating Longwear Lip Liner in ‘Follow the Natural Shape’ then a Matte Longwear Lipstick added over top in ‘Nothing to Lose.’ A dab of the matching gloss – Glossy Lip Hue Hydrating Lip Shine in Nothing to Lose – was the icing on the top.
