How Headaches, Presenteeism and Parkinson’s Disease Are Impacting The Global Community

Headaches, presenteeism and Parkinson’s disease are emerging as three significant health issues impacting the global community.

Headaches, particularly migraines, affect billions of people worldwide. They remain a leading cause of disability and often reduce quality of life and productivity. Presenteeism — when people attend work despite being unwell — is gaining attention for its hidden impact on employee wellbeing, performance and business costs. Meanwhile, Parkinson’s disease is the world’s fastest-growing neurological condition. Diagnosis rates are rising, highlighting the need for greater awareness, earlier detection and improved support for those affected.

Migraines a leading cause of disability

Modern lifestyles including stress, sedentary activity, caffeine, alcohol and poor-quality sleep remain widespread triggers for migraines and headaches. According to an international study led by neurology experts from La Trobe University and Western Health, these conditions affect more than a third of the world’s population. Lead researcher Professor Tissa Wijeratne said advances in diagnostic tools and treatment options have improved the recognition and management of headache disorders. However, rates are expected to remain at the same level due to the enduring influence of modern risk factors. “This study emphasises the urgent need to prioritise headache disorders in global health agendas,” the report says.

The biggest breakthrough in headache medicine has been the development of therapies that target CGRP (calcitonin gene-related peptide), a molecule involved in migraine pain pathways. Researchers are now investigating newer targets such as PACAP inhibitors, digital migraine tracking tools, neuromodulation devices and personalised treatment approaches.

Presenteeism impact on workplace productivity

Presenteeism—when employees are physically at work but not fully functioning due to illness, injury, or mental health challenges – remains a significant yet often overlooked drain on workplace productivity. It’s been estimated to be up to 10 times more costly than absenteeism. Some reports put the total impact at over $34 billion annually. “People generally want to do the right thing, but without the right support, returning too soon can impact both performance and wellbeing,” says Renee Thornton, occupational therapist and CEO of Rehab Management, a national workplace rehabilitation provider.

Organisations are shifting from measuring attendance to measuring wellbeing, productivity and recovery. Microsoft Japan attracted global attention after trialling a four-day work week and measuring outcomes such as productivity, employee satisfaction and wellbeing rather than time spent in the office. The company reported a significant increase in productivity alongside improvements in employee engagement.

Rise and rise of Parkinson’s

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological disorder. Parkinson’s disease is set to rise dramatically. A report published in BMJ details that cases are expected to more than double by 2050, largely due to an ageing population. “An urgent need exists for future research to focus on the development of novel drugs, gene engineering techniques, and cell replacement therapies that are aimed at modifying the course of the disease and improving patients’ quality of life,” the report states. Recently, Duke-NUS scientists unveiled BrainSTEM, a revolutionary single-cell map that captures the full cellular diversity of the developing human brain. The project’s focus on dopamine neurons provides crucial insight for Parkinson’s treatment.

Experimental treatments such as stem-cell replacement therapies and disease-modifying drugs are among the most closely watched developments in the field.
