How do you make sure your special things go to special people?
How do you ensure your special belongings go to the people you want? We take a look at the role of an executor of a will.

Matt Sale is the general manager – retail customers for Public Trust. He is on a mission to ensure each New Zealander has their last wishes heard.

What is an Executor?

An Executor is the person or organisation responsible for ensuring the wishes specified in a person’s Will are carried out as smoothly and efficiently as possible once that person has passed away.

What are the duties of an Executor?

The duties of an Executor include applying for probate (getting court approval to administer the estate), locating and corresponding with all beneficiaries named in the Will, collecting and selling assets and paying estate expenses. The duties expected of an Executor can be difficult, demanding and time consuming.

What are the key skills of an Executor?

Being able to handle conflict and good administration skills would be ideal. The role of an Executor can be challenging and time-consuming if you
don’t have relevant experience in tax, finance or law.

If I’ve been appointed Executor, where can I go for help?

Most legal professionals should be in a position to offer advice. At Public Trust, we have just launched a new service specifically to help Executors carry out their duties. It’s called Executor Assist. We can help you through the process, from preparing the initial court application (probate) to undertaking any estate administration tasks that may be unfamiliar to you on your behalf, or even taking over as Executor if you so wish. Public Trust can help you in any or all of the estate administration tasks from beginning to end.

Who to contact for more information?
