More than 70 brands presented their autumn/winter 2023 designs for New York Fashion Week.

We take a look at some of the highlights of the event in the Big Apple.

Brandon Maxwell

Project Runway judge and designer Brandon Maxwell presented his new collection, eight years after his first runway show.

He said creating his collection was “a very lived experience”.

“I think the music was heavy and maybe the colour palette suggested, you know, something darker, but it really was created an absolute joy for me.”

Gabriela Hearst

Gabriela Hearst showed off an eco-friendly collection at her show in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

With an earthy palette, her designs evoked calm, with pops of yellow, pink and red creating interest.

LaQuan Smith

Designer LaQuan Smith took over one of New York‘s most famed locations for his Fashion Week show on Monday, presenting his Fall 2023 collection at the Rainbow Room.

Smith turned the glamorous space on the 65th floor of 30 Rockefeller Plaza into a catwalk with a celebrity star-studded front row that included musician Lil Nas X.

“This used to be where the high society would come and dance and get glammed up and drink champagne,” Smith said. “That is literally the lifestyle of the women that I dress.”

Prabal Gurung

Nepalese-American fashion designer Prabal Gurung said a trip to Nepal helped him connect to his roots and find inspiration.
The collection featured Gurung’s signature juxtaposition of draping and tailoring while also playing with oversized shoulders and playful embellishments.

Tory Burch

Burch’s latest collections have been seen as a departure from previous presentations and her NYFW show was no exeption.

The brand’s preppy aesthetic appears to have been put to the side in favour of a more relaxed, desconstructed look.

Carolina Herrera

The ballroom at The Plaza Hotel was a fitting location to present the latest ball gowns and elegant evening dresses by Carolina Herrera.

“Elegance is the mixture of opulence with restraint. So, I really found inspiration from Empress Sissi of Austria, who, you know, had a beautiful show on Netflix, ‘The Empress’ and ‘Corsage’ is out now as well,” explained creative director Wes Gordon of his inspiration.

“And it’s this idea of, of that discipline and severity mixed with the drama and the exuberance.”

Rodarte

Spectators observed that looks opening Rodarte’s show could have been inspired by hit Netflix show Wednesday.

Sleeves that draped the floor, plunging necklines and lace were some common features between the looks presented.
