The health benefits of strawberries
Delightfully sweet and irresistibly juicy, the humble strawberry not only tantalises the taste buds but also boasts an array of impressive health benefits.

Red, juicy and delicious, the strawberry is a regular at the celebration table, whether on a pavlova, in a salad or cake, or simply sitting solo. We decided to unpack some of the many health benefits this refreshing berry carries.

A healthy heart

With a high fibre content, no fats and plenty of antioxidants, strawberries reduce cholesterol in the heart’s vessels and arteries. The presence of vitamin B promotes heart function by strengthening the cardiac muscles.

Immunity boosting

Like many other fruits, strawberries are abundant in vitamin C, which helps the immune system function efficiently. Just one serving of strawberries contains close to 150% of the daily recommended intake of vitamin C.

Eyes on the prize

The high amount of vitamin C in strawberries also works to prevent eye damage. Vitamin C protects the eyes from free radicals generated by UV rays, which harm the eye’s protein levels. In addition, vitamin C helps strengthen and protect the retina and cornea.

Arthritis aid

The pain caused by the debilitating disease arthritis can be countered with strawberries. High in antioxidants and detoxifiers, strawberries relieve the aches associated with this condition. The berries’ anti-inflammatory properties also help to ease the pain.

Wrinkle defect

Vitamin C is essential to the production of collagen, which enhances the skin’s smoothness and strength. Collagen levels decrease as we age, so ingesting foods that are high in vitamin C, like strawberries, can help maintain healthy, radiant skin. Strawberries also contain ellagic acid, which prevents the destruction of collagen.

Blood pressure moderation

With approximately 134mg of potassium per serving, strawberries help regulate blood pressure and ward off the negative effects of sodium. Strawberries are also rich in fibre, which promotes low blood pressure.

Low-sugar option

Strawberries are low in sugar as well as being low in calories. With there being around 45 calories per cup of strawberries, this fruit is a tasty dessert option that doesn’t compromise health.
