After Clarence House announced the official engagement of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle last night, the couple has now appeared in their first television interview.

Harry said the proposal occurred on a “standard night” at their cottage, with Markle adding they were “trying to roast a chicken.” She described the proposal as an “amazing surprise, it was so sweet and natural and very romantic. He got one knee,” she says, smiling, to which Harry responds “of course.”

“She didn’t even let me finish”, Harry says. “I was like, can I say yes now?” Markle laughs. “It was a really nice moment, it was just the two of us, and I think I managed to catch her by surprise as well,” Harry said.

The couple touched on the invasion of the press, Harry saying it was “crucial to me to make sure that we had a chance to get to know each other.” After meeting “through a mutual friend” in 2016, Harry said he convinced Markle to join him in Botswana, where they “camped out together under the stars.”

“The fact that I fell in love with Meghan so incredibly quickly was confirmation to me that all the stars had aligned, that everything was perfect”, Harry says, adding that he feels Meghan will be “unbelievably good at the job part” of being married to a royal.

Touching on the difficulties of a royal marriage, Harry said “whatever we have to tackle together will be us as a team. She’s capable of anything, and both of us have passions for making change.”

On children, the couple said: “One step at a time and hopefully we’ll start a family in the future.” Markle pointed out that the royal family had been “so welcoming” and had helped her “feel a part of not just the institution but part of the family.”

Harry said Markle had met the Queen a couple of times, which she described as “incredible… She’s an incredible woman.”

“And the Corgis took to her straight away,” Harry laughed.

Harry said The Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William have been “absolutely amazing” and the whole family have offered “a huge amount of support.”

On Markle’s family, Harry said her mother “is amazing.”

“The ring is yellow gold, because that’s her favourite,” Harry says. “The main stone itself I sourced from Botswana, and the little diamonds either side are from my mother’s jewellery collection to make sures that she’s with us on this crazy journey together.”

“It’s beautiful,” Markle says. “And he designed it.”

A statement from Clarence House on Monday said the couple had become engaged earlier in November after Prince Harry asked Markle’s parents for permission. The Queen and close members of Prince Harry’s family had been informed of the news, and Prince Harry was “delighted” to now publicly announce the engagement.

The Prince, 33, and Markle, 36, will marry in spring 2018 with further details to be announced. The statement concluded by saying the Prince and Markle will live at Nottingham Cottage in London.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle took to the Sunken Garden at Kensington Palace to celebrate their announcement.
