The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will keep details surrounding the arrival of their first child private – breaking with royal tradition of the past 40 years.

“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very grateful for the goodwill they have received from people throughout the United Kingdom and around the world as they prepare to welcome their baby,” Kensington Palace said in a statement on Thursday.

“Their Royal Highnesses have taken a personal decision to keep the plans around the arrival of their baby private. The Duke and Duchess look forward to sharing the exciting news with everyone once they have had an opportunity to celebrate privately as a new family.”

This is a stark contrast to the Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William, as the births of all three of their children – Prince George, 5, Princess Charlotte, 3, and Prince Louis, who turns one this month – have been met with public fanfare.

It was announced before all three of Kate’s deliveries that she would be giving birth in the private Lindo Wing of St. Mary’s Hospital in London, following in the footsteps of Princess Diana, who welcomed both William and Harry there.

Like Diana, Kate and William also debuted their three babies on the steps of the Lindo Wing shortly after the births, not making the world wait long to get their first glimpse of the new heirs.

In the final days of her pregnancy, Duchess Meghan has appointed her own delivery team, led by a female doctor.

The royal couple are expecting their first child in late April or early May. Few details have been announced.
