Berry approached Brody on the red carpet and embraced him with a kiss on the lips, wrapping her arm around his neck.
‘I’m sorry, Georgina, but I’ve gotta do it,’ Halle said to Brody’s partner Georgina Chapman who was standing nearby, as she interrupted his chat with red carpet reporters.
A smiling Brody appeared to laugh and gave Berry a hug afterwards.
The move harks back to a much talked-about moment from the 2003 Oscars ceremony when Brody gave Berry a passionate impromptu kiss on the lips on stage.
The original kiss has sparked much discussion about consent, and the apparent lack of it prior to the move, in a post #metoo era.
At the 2003 awards, Brody had just become the youngest best actor winner for his performance in The Pianist, when he embraced an unsuspecting Berry, the award’s presenter, bending her backwards for a dramatic kiss (see clip below).
The 58-year-old actress posted a clip of today’s reunion on her social media with the caption “Surpriseee Adrien Brody!! I had to get some payback.”
Berry expanded on her thoughts during an interview with Variety.
“That was one hell of a night for him [the 2003 Oscars], and for me as well. To be a part of his moment… tonight I had to pay him back,” Berry told Variety’s Marc Malkin on the Oscars Red Carpet.
“I’ve seen him out at parties, but this is the first time since that night that I’ve seen him on the red carpet somewhere. He’s nominated this year. He deserved that.”
Brody went on to win the Oscar for Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role for “The Brutalist” during today’s Oscars show at the 97th Academy Awards.
