Grimes and Elon Musk have altered their baby’s name, although the change has arguably made it even more difficult to understand or pronounce.

The singer and Tesla CEO caused a stir when they announced their newborn son had been named X Æ A-12.

While many people were eager for clarification over how to pronounce the name, Grimes has instead caused more confusion by revealing that they have made a slight alteration.

With the name X Æ A-12 not complying with California’s naming guidelines due to it containing characters outside of the letters of the alphabet, someone asked via Instagram whether Grimes and Musk had changed the name.

The songwriter then shared the new name – X Æ A-Xii. In another comment, Grimes said it was “Roman numerals”, which “looks better tbh”, later adding that “one dash is allowed”.

Since Grimes and Musk announced the name of their son, there has been plenty of debate over how to pronounce the name, with the couple seemingly unable to agree themselves.

Musk appeared on podcast The Joe Rogan Experience on 7 May, and said it was pronounced “just X, like the letter X, and then the ‘Æ’ is pronounced ‘ash’”.

“And then A-12 is my contribution,” he said. “The Archangel-12, the precursor to the SR-71, the coolest plane ever.”

Meanwhile, on the same day, Grimes responded to an Instagram comment with a different take.

““It’s just X, like the letter X. Then A.I. Like how you said the letter A then I,” she said.
