Golden Globes: hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler call out lack of diversity
An audience of first responders made up the attendees at the 2021 Golden Globe Awards, with celebrities joining via zoom to accept their awards.

With many criticising the lack of diversity among the Hollywood Foreign Press Association members and nominations, hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler didn’t shy away from calling out the criticisms.

“The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is made up of around 90 international (no black) journalists who attend movie junkets each year in search of a better life,” said Fey, joining the bi-coastal awards ceremony from New York, with co-host Amy Poehler joining from California.

“Everybody is understandably upset at the HFPA and their choices,” added Poehler further on in the monologue. “A lot of flashy garbage got nominated but that happens, that’s like their thing. But a number of black actors and black-led projects were overlooked.”

“And look, we all know awards shows are stupid,” Fey added. “The point is that even with stupid things, inclusivity is important, and there are no black members of the Hollywood Foreign Press. So you’ve got to change that.”

The hosts also touched on the controversy surrounded Sia’s Music, a film that has been criticised for its portrayal of an autistic character.

“Sia’s controversial film Music is nominated for best international flop-a-roony,” Fey said. “I don’t want to get into it, but it’s real problematic and Twitter is saying it’s the most offensive casting since Kate Hudson was the Weight Watchers spokesperson.”

Nomadland, starring Frances McDormand took home the best director prize for Chinese-born Chloe Zhao, the first female director of Asian descent to win in that category.

The Crown, Schitt’s Creek and The Queen’s Gambit nabbed the TV awards, with actor Emma Corrin, who played Princess Diana, thanking the late royal upon accepting her Best Actress award.

Chadwich Boseman, who passed away last year at the age of 43, was awarded a posthumous best movie actor award for his performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
