‘Glazed donut nails’ is the surprisingly chic new manicure trend to know

Nail trends these days move as fast as wildfire. Usually spawned on social media, they generally involve some sort of delicate or complicated nail art that requires a regular trip to the nail salon for some application expertise. Though fun, they’re not always the most aesthetically tasteful.

So you can bet when a simple, minimalist and chic nail trend comes along, we jump at the chance to DIY.

That’s certainly the case with the latest look making waves.

First spotted on Hailey Bieber’s fingertips at the Met Gala, the look is now referred to as ‘Glazed donut nails’, and involves a pearlescent, shimmery-finish topcoat over a pale base nail colour. The effect gives the same kind of glistening dew as a hot glazed Krispy Kreme donut, hence the name.

Bieber’s manicurist Zola Ganzorigt, responsible for her Met Gala nail look, has since shared the details on the exact products she used to create the effect.

Using gel products and a UV nail light to cure each coat as you would in salon, Ganzorigt layered OPI Stay Strong gel base coat, then applied a sheer white OPI gel color called Funny Bunny. OPI’s chrome effects powder in Tin Man Can is then gently buffed into the surface with a sponge-tipped applicator before finishing with OPI’s clear Stay Shiny top coat.

To DIY at home you could use any pale and sheer nude or off-white shade with a translucent shimmer, like those from Sally Hansen or Revlon, over the top.

The manicure is quickly catching on. Stars like Vanessa Hudgens and Euphoria’s Sydney Sweeney have been seen wearing the finish on their tips and the hashtag #glazeddonutnails currently has over nine million views, and counting.

Bieber, of course, has already debuted a summer-appropriate twist on the look, wearing a zingy citrus yellow with the sheer shimmer effect glazed over the top.
