Burton will becomes Givenchy’s eighth designer — and its second female couturier – designing for all women’s and men’s collections for the fashion house.
The designer, who departed Alexander McQueen in September 2023 after 26 years, is expected to be introduced to staff at Givenchy’s Paris atelier this week. Her first designs for Givenchy will be seen during Paris Fashion Week in March 2025.
“It is a great honour to be joining the beautiful house of Givenchy, it is a jewel,” said Burton in a statement. “I am so excited to be able to write the next chapter in the story of this iconic house and to bring to Givenchy my own vision, sensibility and beliefs.”
Sarah Burton previously spent her entire career at British fashion house Alexander McQueen. She became creative director of the fashion house in May 2010, following the death of visionary founder Lee Alexander McQueen. Burton had previously worked alongside Lee Alexander McQueen for more than 14 years but shot to international fame and recognition herself for creating Kate Middleton’s wedding dress for her marriage to Prince William in April 2011.
She had first joined the brand as a student intern after receiving recommendation from one of her professors at the prestigious design school, Central Saint Martins.
Matthew M. Williams was previously the creative director at Givenchy, but finished up at the end of 2023.
