Getting behind the wheel in the new Corolla Cross hybrid SUV

Getting behind the wheel in the new Corolla Cross hybrid SUV
Solidifying its position as the world’s most popular car, Toyota introduces its Corolla Cross hybrid SUV featuring advanced technology plus a range of impressive new features and luxury touches.

Most of us have a Toyota Corolla story. Perhaps it was the first car you learned to drive in, or the trusty family vehicle. It continues to be the most popular car in the world today, and now, the iconic model is shifting gears with the launch of the brand new Corolla Cross hybrid SUV.

Launching with four flagship grades – GX, GXL, Limited FWD and Limited AWD – the Corolla Cross delivers a fresh identity for the model we’re all familiar with by elevating its style, size and efficiency.

The compact SUV market is one of the fastest growing, and Toyota is tapping into customer needs by designing the Corolla Cross to sit neatly between a Corolla Hatch and RAV4 when it comes to size.

Made with versatility for our varied lifestyles, be it zipping around town on daily errands or adventuring off on weekend getaways, the Corolla Cross boasts significantly more cargo space, a higher ride and, in the case of the Limited, an impressive panoramic roof for extra space.

A greener future

The Corolla Cross represents a major step forward in Toyota’s decarbonisation journey, with the entire Corolla line-up in New Zealand now exclusively available in hybrid form. Electric and hybrid is quickly moving into the mainstream and Toyota is becoming a leader in this space by designing to consumer needs, providing a greener choice that’s still affordable.

“It’s not just contributing to mobility for people, but has the lower emission credentials,” says Toyota New Zealand General Manager of New Vehicles, Steve Prangnell. “The platform that it’s built on is cutting edge for us.” With a range of over 700km, the Corolla Cross’ impressive efficiency comes from the state-of-the-art technology under the hood. Here, alongside a 2.0 litre engine, you’ll find Toyota’s fifth-generation hybrid electric system, which offers new levels of power and efficiency.

With this advanced technology, Toyota has managed to strike a balance between lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, and greater power than the Corolla Hatch and Wagon (including the ability to tow 750 kg). You can tailor the driving experience to your needs with three different driving modes (Eco, Normal and Power), plus the added option for full EV.

Safety features

Building on the Corolla’s long- standing reputation for safety and reliability, the Cross offers the latest advancement in safety and driving assist technology including Pre- Collision Safety system, Emergency Steering Assist and Blind Spot Monitor. Getting into tight city parking spots is easy with some clever additions in the Limited grade, which offers hands-free automatic parking.

New to the Corolla Cross is a desirable range of creature comforts. Connecting devices to the touch screen display is easy with Apple Carplay and Android Auto standard across all models, while the premium Limited has the added bonus of a high- end, nine-speaker sound system and Qi wireless phone charging. Thoughtful touches in the premium grades bring elements of luxury into the everyday, with soft leather interiors, heated seats and steering wheel and driver seat lumbar support.

Life is multifaceted and when it comes to how we drive, versatility is vital. What’s more, drivers are now putting sustainability at the forefront of their purchasing decisions. With the all-new Corolla Cross, Toyota is answering the call with a compact hybrid SUV that moves with our modern lifestyles
