Today’s glamorous event marks the primary fundraiser for New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, a historic collection of costume and fashion.
Celebrities, designers, and cultural icons grace the huge public red carpet and private dinner to also celebrate the opening of the Costume Institute’s yearly exhibition.
This year’s exhibition, also called “Costume Art,” explores fashion as art and the relationship between clothing and the body. It’s a theme that guides the dress code too, so keep your eyes out for interpretations of this idea in the ensembles worn by high profile attendees.
We’re hoping to see iconic dresses from brands like Schiaparelli and Viktor & Rolf, known for regularly delving into artistic and surrealist details, as well as piece from past collections with representations of famous works of art.
This year the red carpet is transformed into a cream and green arrivals area that has been made to resemble garden cobblestones, complete with hanging wisteria flowers, potted plants and a ‘hedgerow’ perimeter. Vogue revealed the event design team, which includes Baz Luhrmann, decided to draw on elements of Renaissance design to create an Italian gardens feel, providing a romantic backdrop for the fashionable arrivals.
