Boxing Day is the biggest ticket-selling day of the year in Australia. Here are five Boxing Day blockbusters to put on your watch list.

Aquaman 3D, Rated M

Jason Momoa stars as Aquaman in what is the DC Entertainment character’s first feature film. Momoa stars as the reluctant hero, Arthur Curry, who learns that he is to inherit the underwater kingdom of Atlantis. The film co-stars Amber Heard, Nicole Kidman and Temuera Morrison and is directed by James Wan (The Conjuring, Furious 7). What to expect:  This spin-off of the Justice League includes lots of gratuitous shots of Momoa’s rippling six pack and a lot of water.

Holmies, CTC

If you’re fans of Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly (co-stars in Step Brothers, Talladega Nights, then you will love Holmies, which is essentially another opportunity for this comedy duo to ham it up. The film is directed by Etan Cohen and the story revolves around the pair trying to perfect their plummy English accents while simultaneously stopping James Moriarty (Ralph Fiennes) from assassinating Queen Victoria (Pam Ferris). What to expect:  Another bit of revisionist Sherlock mania about the detective and his sidekick.

Ralph Breaks the Internet, PG

Ralph Breaks the Internet is the sequel to Disney’s 2012 3D animated adventure Wreck-it Ralph. John C. Reilly returns to voice the sequel along with Sarah Silverman, James Corden and an all-star voice cast. This time, Ralph ventures into the vortex that is the Internet. The storyline is strong, and the internet references are hilarious as video game bad guy Ralph and sidekick Vanellope (Silverman) rely on the citizens of the Internet to help find their way. What to expect: Disney owning the whole princess phenomena.

Vice, CTC

Oscar-winning director Adam McKay (of The Big Short) brings his trademark humour to the true story of US Vice President Dick Cheney in Vice. Christian Bale stars as Cheney who was vice president when George W. Bush won the 2000 election. The film follows the story unfolding behind the scenes as Cheney takes charge, wielding his power as VP to reshape the country and the world. What to expect: An insightful look at power and world leaders who make decisions that have lasting consquences.

The Favourite, MA 15+

Olivia Colman stars as a very frail wheelchair-bound Queen Anne in this film set in 18th century England. While Queen Anne occupies the throne, it’s her close friend Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz) who governs the country. When a charming new servant Abigail (Emma Stone) arrives, the costume drama becomes wildly entertaining. What to expect: A film that presents as a proper grown-up drama but is in fact a wickedly compelling comedy.  See this film, even if you think you don’t want to.
