Fiji no longer virus-free – one new case of COVID-19

Fiji confirms new case of COVID-19 at the border.

The 66-year-old man who tested positive for the virus recently returned to Fiji from India.

This marks the first new case of COVID-19 in Fiji since 20 April.

The man arrived into Fiji on Saturday and the positive test was confirmed soon after.

The man’s son has also been tested, with results pending.

Speaking at a news conference in Suva, acting permanent secretary of the health ministry, Dr James Fong, says there is no need for concern in the community.

“We have been well prepared for the likelihood of Covid-19 cases developing amongst these repatriated citizens,” he said.

“But as we’ve made clear, Fiji has the infrastructure, surveillance capabilities, and local testing capacities to ensure that these quarantine cases at the border present zero risk to the general public.”

The man has been taken to Nadi Hospital for isolation.
