Michelangelo is on the menu as 7 Paintings return for a new season, hosted for a three month stint at Sofitel Wellington.
In many cases, fine dining is an artform in itself. Top chefs plate each ingredient with composition and flair, the visual presentation adding to each dishe’s appeal.
Putting a twist on the idea, that artform takes inspiration from famous painters in a popular dining experience confirmed for a new season in Wellington.

7 Paintings – The Art of Dining is a seven-course meal that takes guests on a multi-sensory journey based around famous works of art. Sofitel Wellington is to host the experience on Friday and Saturday nights for a three month run starting in mid September.
Each course draws on works by celebrated artists such as Michelangelo, Banksy, Picasso, Warhol and van Gogh, and is paired with digital projections, music, and guest involvement from painting to solving riddles.
The inventive presentation has become a global hit, and has had previous seasons in Auckland and Wellington. Now, executive chef Joe Costello of the Sofitel’s Jardin Grill will take his turn delivering these delicious works of art.

For the Sofitel Wellington season, the seven courses have been reimagined by Costello around French technique and in-season regional produce. Highlights include a Michelangelo-inspired duck pâté and caviar tart, Banksy venison carpaccio, Picasso flame-grilled fish, Warhol slow-braised beef cheek, and a van Gogh lemon tart.
“Chef Joe and his team have taken the concept and created something that will enchant diners with legendary artistry on the plate, made with the best in-season produce the region has to offer,” says Liam Caughwell, General Manager at Sofitel Wellington.
