But the pint-sized pop-star has confirmed that the show is still “definitely happening”.
“When I got locked into doing a musical everyone said, ‘It takes a long time’,” Minogue told The Sun.
“I remember thinking ‘Really? We make albums, go on tour, get things done’ … No, it takes forever. It’s a work in progress.”
Here’s what we know so far about the upcoming musical production:
There’s been a table read
Minogue told Gay Times that enough progress has been made on the show that there has been an initial table read.
“We’ve got to a table read, complete with music and an actual running of a full show as a table read, and we have gone back to the drawing board,” she said.
She’s working on it with William Baker
Minogue’s long-time friend, collaborator and stylist William Baker is her collaborator on the show.
It’s been in the works for more than a decade
Rumours a Kylie musical was being created first emerged way back in 2008. In 2011, Baker revealed he was working on the musical with Minogue, saying at the time that it would “hopefully be done next year”. Fast forward 10 years and we’re still waiting!
A synopsis was first completed in 2012
Minogue said in 2012 that she and Baker had worked out a storyline, before the show took a “back seat” due to her other commitments.
Speaking at the time, she said: “We’ve got the material, and maybe by the time it happens I’ll have more material. My friend William and I have done the synopsis.”
Minogue has said there is “so much to play with” when it comes to the music. “We know a lot of the songs can be interpreted in different ways, it’s just getting all the other important stuff sorted. I would be as excited as the next person to see that musical.”
It’s not about Kylie’s life
Minogue confirmed early on that the show would not be about her life, with the songs providing the backdrop for a different storyline.
Kylie won’t star in it
While Minogue has said she is a big fan of musicals and having her own show is “a dream”, she won’t be starring in the production.
There’s still no release date
Sadly, we can’t mark the diaries just yet, as a date for the show’s debut has not been confirmed. Minogue told Gay Times, “I still think it’s going to be a little while yet.”
There are plans for it to open on the West End
Minogue revealed that she hopes it will open on the West End when it’s ready. Hopefully it won’t take too long for the show to make its way Down Under!
