Dramatic footage captures moment Mexican volcano erupts

Dramatic time-lapse footage has captured the moment the Mexican volcano Popocatepetl erupted earlier this week.

Popocatepetl erupted shortly before 7:30pm on March 26, spewing rocks and lava down the mountainside and sparking wildfires.

Nobody was injured, but authorities are monitoring the volcano and have issued a warning to nearby towns not to attempt to approach the crater for safety reasons.

The eruption is cause for concern for the millions of residents who live in the shadow of Popocatepetl.

Popocatépetl is an active stratovolcano, located in the states of Puebla and Morelos, in central Mexico, and lies in the eastern half of the Trans-Mexican volcanic belt – around 70km from the nation’s capital, Mexico City.

Scientists have been keeping a close eye on Popocatepetl in recent years after it became active again in 2004, erupting several times since.
