The recognisable face of the label, Donatella took over the top design role after the tragic murder of her brother Gianni, in 1997.
The 69-year-old will be replaced by Dario Vitale, who is a former design director for Miu Miu.
The move means for the first time in almost 50 years, Versace will no longer be designed by a Versace.
But Donatella is not stepping away completely, and will remain as brand ambassador, responsible for Versace’s philanthropic and charitable endeavours as well as representing the brand globally, likely on red carpets at high-profile events.
Donatella paid tribute to her brother’s vision in a statement confirming the move from parent company Capri Holdings Limited.
“It has been the greatest honor of my life to carry on my brother Gianni’s legacy,” she said.
“He was the true genius, but I hope I have some of his spirit and tenacity. In my new role I will remain Versace’s most passionate supporter. Versace is in my DNA and always in my heart.”

She went on to thank the team that had worked with her and flagged her support for Vitale to take the luxury house forward.
“Championing the next generation of designers has always been important to me,” she said. “I am thrilled that Dario Vitale will be joining us, and excited to see Versace through new eyes.”
Dario Vitale confirmed he was excited about the next steps.
“I am truly honored to join Versace as the Chief Creative Officer and to be a part of this special and powerful fashion luxury House created by Gianni and Donatella,” he said.
The news comes on a busy day for fashion, and a tumultuous period of change within top design roles in fashion. Earlier today it was announced Balenciaga’s Demna would move to Gucci to take up the reins as artistic director, in the role previous vacated by designer Sabato de Sarno.
