Doc Edge 2020: 5 films we can’t wait to see
The Doc Edge film festival is back for 2020 and this year, they're going digital - releasing their entire festival programme online.

This year marks the 15th anniversary of New Zealand’s Academy Award-qualifying Doc Edge Festival. With their new digital platform, the acclaimed festival has packed their programme with over 80 films.

In the lead up to its opening on Friday 12 June, MiNDFOOD will be sharing 15 films for 15 years of DocEdge. Here are the first five films we can’t wait to see.

A Chef’s Voyage

Step into the world of renowned chef David Kinch as he and his team journey to France for a one-of-a-kind collaboration with three legendary chefs.

Opening as Kinch and his team at the 3 Star Michelin restaurant, Manresa, in California close up shop and travel to France, the chefs embark on a celebration of the restaurants 15th anniversary.

Taking audiences behind-the-scenes, A Chef’s Voyage shows the pressures and high stakes that are involved in such an ambitious journey. It’s a fascinating look at the inner workings of one of America’s best restaurants, and a thrilling journey as they visit Paris, Provence and Marseille to cook at France’s most acclaimed restaurants.

Elementa

In a world premiere, Elementa completes Richard Sidey’s groundbreaking and decade-long Speechless trilogy.

Rich, visceral and fully-immersive, the film takes you deep into Canada’s Great Bear Rainforest where a rare and seldom-seen creature lives. ‘The ghost bear’, a black bear with white fur, has evaded people for years and according to local mythology, is a reminder of a time when the world was covered in ice.

Filmed in black and white a shot over five years on seven continents, Elementa is a visionary and artistically stunning project.

The film pulls you into the vast wilderness of the white continent and ancient rainforests, journeying to mighty oceans and erupting volcanoes.

Picture Character takes a deep-dive into one of the modern world’s biggest phenomenons: emojis.

From their humble beginnings in Japan, to the emergence of a new digital language, directors Martha Shane and Ian Cheney shine a light on the complex, conflict-prone and often hilarious world of this emerging visual language.

Now in his late 80s, the famous photographer looks back at his long and illustrious career, completing over 600 celebrity photoshoots over the years.
