Do I Really Need an Eye Cream in my Beauty Routine?

If you’re serious about slathering on your favourite moisturiser day after day, there’s a chance you might have thought to yourself: Do I really need an eye cream in my beauty routine?

While access to a plethora of skincare products has made it much easier to find formulations that address our unique skin concerns, it’s also easy to get lost in a sea of information and end up with a 15-step routine that you maybe don’t need. But while you might not need a skincare routine that takes up hours of your day, there are a few essentials that will really make a difference to skin health, and eye cream happens to be one of them.

Why do I need an eye cream?

Anyone who is just starting to notice the signs of ageing on their skin will probably well aware of the fact that the delicate skin around the eyes is often the first place our age starts to show.

Not only is the skin that surrounds the eyes 40 per-cent thinner than other areas of the face, but the area also has fewer oil glands which mean the skin around the eyes is prone to dehydration too.

Then there’s the fact that each time we blink, smile, frown or laugh the skin around our eyes moves. Add that to the fact that scientists believe that most of us blink over 10,000 times and day, and it’s not too hard to understand how over time all of these micro-motions stretch the muscles and skin in this area. Eventually, the signs of ageing, fine lines, wrinkles, loss of density, tone and texture, all become apparent around the eyes.

How do I find the right eye cream?

When it comes to choosing an eye cream, we’re spoilt for choice. That’s why it pays to work out what your specific skin concerns are before you begin the hunt for the perfect formulation. Whether it’s dryness, puffiness, dark circles, fine lines or wrinkles that you want to combat, there’s a formula out there that will get the job done.

Below are a few of our favourite eye creams that target different concerns:

How do I apply eye cream?

Once you’ve got your hands on a good eye cream you’ll want to ensure you’re applying it the right way. Start by adding it into your morning and evening routine, and also apply after cleansing.

Using your ring finger or middle finger, gently dab the eye cream around the orbital bone (the socket of your eye). Start below the eye at the inner corner and move towards the outer corner.

To avoid eye irritation, never apply eye cream directly under your lower eyelashes or on your eyelid. You can, however, dab a small amount above the eyebrow or along the brow bone.

Now that you know everything you need to know about eye cream, here are our favourite tips for applying eyeshadow.

Deadly Ponies reveals new vegan-friendly collection

Much-love Kiwi accessories brand Deadly Ponies has launched a vegan-friendly collection.

For quite some time now our lifestyle choices have played a role in influencing the products we put on our skin and the clothing that we wear. Much to a delight, Deadly Ponies has just released a new ethically minded collection, created from a plant-based, vegan-friendly leather.

The new collection, aptly named Cactus, harnesses the innovative Nopal Texture. The newly developed cactus leather isn’t only suitable for friendly, it’s also an incredible sustainable choice.  Two-years in the making, this material is a by-product of the
pharmaceutical industry, using only natural rainfall and the sun, as energy sources.

“Customers have been asking us for a while to create a vegan product,” says Deadly Ponies creative director Liam Bowden. He explains that while it’s been something that he and the team have wanted to create for quite some time now, the process has been challenging and find a sustainable leather alternative wasn’t easy.

With greenwashing rife within the fashion industry, it was crucial for Deadly Ponies to get things right from the get-go. “Most vegan leathers are produced using synthetic materials that don’t biodegrade, are produced with toxic chemicals and require higher water consumption in manufacturing. When we entered into the project we wanted to make sure we were taking those things into consideration” says Creative Director, Liam Bowden.

Sourced from an organic cactus plantation in Mexico, only the mature leaves are harvested to ensure sustainable plant regeneration – with the pulp used for medicinal purposes. The nopal cactus leaves are then sun-dried, before being processed into the innovative, organic cactus leather.

While the textile used within the collection might be a little different to what loyal Deadly Ponies are used to, the brand worked closely with the supplier to ensure the final product remained synonymous with the iconic texture and quality of  Deadly Ponies’ existing leathers.

“This new material had to be totally sustainable, but also achieve a similar look and feel to our more classic leather finishes that our products are known for. It took another year of development to achieve the perfect composition” says Bowden.

Handcrafted by Deadly Ponies artisans at their custom-built eco atelier, the inaugural Cactus collection is available from Wednesday 29th July exclusively online and in Deadly Ponies’ stores, in coveted classics Mr Siamese, Mr Mini Leopard and Mr Mini Chain Mail.
