Fashion enthusiasts know the history of the famed ‘New-Look’ collection, the run of influential designers at Dior’s helm and can spot a Lady Dior bag at 50 paces.
But the founding designer’s early days away from the glamour of Paris are lesser known.
As the French fashion house marks its 80th anniversary this year, a new exhibition, Christian Dior. Memories of Childhood, casts new light on the famed couturier’s adolescence and how it shaped his career and many lasting details still embraced today.
Held inside the The Christian Dior Museum which is located in Villa Les Rhumbs, Dior’s childhood home in Granville, France, the location helps detail the story.
From the seaside view from the top floor to the verdant gardens outside and the town beyond, many elements from the designer’s first years became recurring themes in his work.
Visitors can explore the place that was a constant inspiration, better understanding some signature elements – such as the house’s grey and pink decor – that have been revisited over the years.
“My life and my style owe almost everything to its location and architecture,” Christian Dior explained in his memoirs, published in 1956.
According to the exhibit, Dior shared a deep attachment to nature with his mother, while inheriting his entrepreneurial spirit from his father. His festive youth explains his fascination with carnivals and casinos, as well as his passion for ball gowns, which had a lasting impact on his vision of fashion. The house’s clifftop view of the Jersey in the Channel Islands, sparked his unwavering affection for Great Britain.
