It must be a considerable challenge for a creative designer to put their own spin on a previously loved design. When bags become best-sellers, changing them becomes quite the risk.
We can’t forsee any complaints about Dior’s latest arrival, however.
The Toujours Hobo is a new design with a familiar lineage. First introduced as part of Dior’s Spring/Summer 2023 ready-to-wear collection, the soft construction and slightly folded shape of the original Dior Toujours felt relaxed and fresh, the perfect style to carry about during the day. The house’s signature criss-cross Cannage pattern was cleverly created with a quilted effect, giving new dimension to the emblem.
Rather than starting with a clean slate, Anderson has now refined the Toujours shape slightly with two important changes we think gives the bag renewed relevance.
First, is the curved hobo shape. The roomy, crescent-shape of hobo bags has leapt back into fashion’s spotlight recently, often in suede or tan leather to embrace the 70s appeal loved of the design.
Of course Anderson knows to zig when others zag, and he chose to scale down slightly and join each end of the bag together with a central clip. The result moves away from the slouchy feel of classic hobos, instead resulting in a petite, refined almost-bucket shape that feels surprisingly sweet.
That clip also changes the way the bag is primarily carried. Now when linked together, that rounded shape creates a small bag that is easy to carry in your hand or hook over the forearm. Yes, you can add a longer strap to wear cross-body, but we love the effect of the curved shape dangling from the hand when that ‘CD’ lock clasp is connected.
These designable elements are supported with a so-now colour palette and attached D, I, O, R charms, that provide a playful finishing touch.
Though arriving with the Autumn/Winter 26/27 collection, for spring and summer Down Under the shades of soft ballet pink, mint green or ice blue feel just right for the incoming sunshine. Tan suede or black are also versatile options.
The Toujours Hobo is available in two sizes, small or with a removable chain strap in a mini version, perfect to accompany more elevated evening outfits.
