David Attenborough on his new documentary, ‘A Life On Our Planet’
David Attenborough's long-awaited film A Life On Our Planet arrives on Netflix this week.

In the lead up to his new documentary, which he has described as his “witness statement” the 94-year-old living legend said his latest documentary is an urgent address on the climate crisis.

Speaking to Anderson Cooper on 60 Minutes, Attenborough said when making the film, it was important to be honest about the dire situation the world is in.

“It isn’t that I enjoy saying, “Doom, doom, doom.” On the contrary, I’d much rather enjoy, take thrill, excitement, pleasure, joy, joy, joy, joy. But if you’ve got any sense of responsibility, you can’t do that,” he said.

Despite the doom and gloom, Attenborough says we must be optimistic.

“We don’t have an alternative. I mean, what good does it do to say, “Oh, to hell with it, I don’t care.” You can’t say that. Not if you love your children. Not if you love the rest of human – how can you say that?”

When it comes to the many actions to save the planet, the lifelong environmental advocate says there is a lot of hope in “rewilding” our forests and oceans.

“The ocean covers two-thirds of the surface of the planet, which means there is a special role for it in our revolution to rewild the world,” he explains.

Speaking to MiNDFOOD in June, Attenborough reflected on his 50-year-long career documenting the natural world.

With hundreds of nature documentaries under his belt, Attenborough is still just as passionate about the natural world as the day he started. “If you’ve been living with it for 50 years, as I have, then the emotion doesn’t really decrease,” he explains. “It doesn’t come to you new.”
