Cynthia Nixon has welcomed the endorsement of an influential chunk of progressive New Yorkers, after the New York Working Families Party (WFP) voted to endorse her challenge to Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo. A coalition of labour unions and progressive activist groups, the WFP voted in favour of Nixon by 91.5%.
Taking the podium after the news was announced, Nixon thanked the organisation and called it the “political home for progressives in New York State, and a source of grassroots muscle for the movement.” The Sex and the City star commended the group for standing up for change. “You know and I know and they know that if we want change, if we want a country and a state that works for all of us, if we want that to happen, it’s on us.”
Nixon also took to Instagram to express her excitement about the endorsement. “Together, we will fight to end the racial, economic, and educational inequality that deprive so many working and middle-class New Yorkers of opportunity”, she wrote. “With the Working Families Party by our side, we will fight for equitable schools, good jobs, single-payer health care, subways that actually work, environmental justice, and an end to mass incarceration. It’s time for a New York that belongs to all of us — for the many, not the few.”
Nixon has also received endorsements from the New York Progressive Action Network, Make the Road Action, NY Communities for Change and Citizen Action of New York.
