Creating MiNDFOOD’s Book Club pages

Creating MiNDFOOD’s Book Club pages
The making of our Book Club pages each month inevitably involves a lot of reading, and a whole lot of Post-it® notes.

What most readers love about MiNDFOOD is its diversity of content range. One moment, you’ll be reading about a new government incentive in China that’s encouraging children to visit their grandparents, the next you’re devouring a delicious recipe or getting up close and personal with a Hollywood actor and the next, you’re being offered the best new reads in our much-loved Book Club pages.

From crime fiction to biographies to must-have cookbooks and the latest thought-provoking non-fiction titles, our Book Club section sees our team handpick and our top book selections of the month that we think our readers will love.

I start by revising previous issues of the magazine with help from my stack of Post-it® Notes by 3M to ensure we offer a varying range of titles each month, covering a range of topics from a variety of authors and publishing houses.

Each month, books and corrected proofs flood into the office for review consideration.

The initial cull happens based on content range and book premise, judged on whether it is fit for the MiNDFOOD audience. Post-it® Notes by 3M are perfect for this.

Don’t mind the Post-it® easel; our advertising director recently returned from a holiday in South Africa.

We also receive book catalogues of upcoming releases that I flag using my Post-it® flags by 3M, from publishing houses right across Australia and New Zealand.

Then it’s a matter of dispersing the shortlisted books around the office for as many of the team to read as possible, coupled with research on any published reviews on the books online, including testimonials. That’s me in the spots.

Once we have selected our top picks, I write a small blurb about them, before selecting the coveted Book of the Month title. We always try to interview the author of this one to run online.

Back to the drawing board for next month!
