Craving the zen vibes of Tranquillum House from ‘Nine Perfect Strangers’?

By MiNDFOOD

In ‘Nine Perfect Strangers’, health guru Masha (played by Nicole Kidman) runs a wellness retreat at the so-called Tranquillum House.

While the Tranquillum House doesn’t really exist in real life, you can visit wellness and yoga centre Soma in Byron Bay where the show was filmed, as well as add the locally-sourced furnishings to your own zen space.

Soma launched in 2019 providing a unique space and expert resources to rest, recharge, and renew yourself from the inside out—mind, body, soul. According to their website, Soma has been mindfully designed with a modern yet warm aesthetic, allowing clarity externally for whatever space you need within. Featuring a 22 acre forest with thousands of plant species, you can explore, relax by the fresh water infinity pool, practice in the yoga dome or simply read a book in the shared living area.

The production team on the series, including set decorator Glen Johnson, also used a private residence known as Lune de Sang to bring the fictional town of Cabrillo, California and Tranquillum House to life. The reason for selecting Lune de Sang and Soma as filming locations for Nine Perfect Strangers was “their mid-century modern architecture and stunning gardens and surroundings,” Johnson reveals. Lune de Sang’s modern architecture features “lots of glass and open areas with a great flow of energy,” not to mention the nearby surroundings of bamboo forests and tropical plants.

Being located in Byron Bay meant there were an abundance of local stores and suppliers to decorate the sets. As well as re-upholstering furniture, a number of artworks and soft furnishings from the area were also installed to add to the zen mid-century aesthetic. “We changed all the bed linen to suit our colours, moved around artworks, and sourced our art locally when we could,” says Johnson.

Local Australian-based suppliers included poolside chairs from Leveson’s, parchment lampshades from St. Johns, beeswax candles from Queen Bee, floral arrangements by Mary Jane Coy, sustainable rugs from Grounded, and ceramics made by local artisans.
