Court records reportedly show Britney Spears opposed conservatorship for years

Britney Spears reportedly expressed opposition to the conservatorship which controls her life and finances earlier and more frequently than the public had previously been aware of, according to confidential court records obtained by The New York Times.

The court records reportedly show that as early as 2014, Britney’s court-appointed lawyer Samuel D. Ingham III told a hearing that the singer had a ‘shopping list’ of grievances cited as reasons to remove her father James as conservator, including his drinking.

The newspaper has reported that a 2016 report shows a court investigator said the popstar “articulated she feels the conservatorship has become an oppressive and controlling tool against her”.

“She is ‘sick of being taken advantage of’ and she said she is the one working and earning her money but everyone around her is on her payroll,” the investigator wrote.

The New York Times reports that in 2019, Britney told the court that she had felt forced into a stay at a mental health facility and to perform against her will due to the conservatorship.

Britney’s father, James Spears (known as Jamie), was appointed conservator in 2008 following concerns over her mental health and substance abuse.

Britney is set to address court in LA on Wednesday local time after Ingham filed a request at her most recent hearing.

“The conservatee has requested that I seek from the court a status hearing at which she can address the court directly,” Ingham said.
