Chanel will no longer manufacture products made from snakes, crocodiles, lizards and other exotic skins. The luxury French fashion house announced the decision earlier this week, just days before its pre-fall 2019 Métiers d’Art show in New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The Parisian maison cited difficulties in sourcing skins that meet the house’s quality and ethical standards as reasons behind the decision. “The future of high-end products will come from the know-how of what our atelier is able to do,” explained Bruno Pavlovsky, president of Chanel fashion and president of Chanel SAS.
The move makes the Chanel the biggest luxury fashion house to ban exotic skins. High street brands including ASOS, Nike and H&M have already banned exotic skins, while luxury players including Gucci, Versace and Burberry are amongst the few that have ceased to use fur in future collections.
