Chanel Haute Couture’s spring-summer 2020 collection reimagines Gabrielle Chanel’s childhood

After the death of her mother in 1895, Gabrielle Chanel was sent to the orphanage Abbey of Aubazine in Correze. This place and time became the inspiration of Chanel Haute Couture’s spring-summer 2020 collection.

Exploring the paradox between sophistication and simplicity, the collection brings together the architectural elements of Aubazine and Gabrielle’s boarding experience.

Dresses of two-tone wool and tweed, flat pleats and braided belts echo the school life of a young Gabrielle. Graphic motifs and embroidery of suits, skirts and dresses reflect stained glass windows and paving stones.

This formality gives way to a graceful lightness with featherweight dresses, taffeta capes and an elegant wedding dress to finish off the show.
