Celebrating 20 Years of Design Excellence
Fisher & Paykel are celebrating 20 years of perfecting the DishDrawer Dishwasher

Twenty years ago, the designers at Fisher & Paykel developed a revolutionary product that would change kitchen use forever. The DishDrawer™ Dishwasher was the first of its kind, offering an ergonomic and ingenious design and causing quite a stir worldwide.

Since it was first launched, over 1.25 million DishDrawer™ Dishwashers have been manufactured and sold in more than 20 countries worldwide. It has been refined over nine generations, and remains the only drawer dishwasher on the market.

Two decades down the track, this innovative appliance is in its prime; its original benefits honed. “Good designers and creators of all kinds are always looking for ways to improve things,” says Lauren Palmer, Fisher & Paykel’s Chief Designer, Cooking and Dishwashing. “We have put a lot of work into observing how people use the appliance.”

The new models are quieter and more energy and water-efficient than ever and some models incorporate clever features such as flexible racking and quick, extra dry and sanitise modes.

It is also now more durable, thanks to Fisher & Paykel’s rigorous testing for twenty years’ continuous use. The DishDrawer™ has cemented its reputation as a design classic with its emphasis on sleek lines, and has scooped numerous top industry and consumer choice awards, while continuing to build a global market share.

Palmer says that the evolution of the DishDrawer™ is indicative of Fisher & Paykel’s commitment to excellence. “The fundamental driver for Fisher & Paykel’s designers is curiosity,” she says. “We love to understand how people live, how they use our products, how we would use them in our own homes, and tailoring the designs to suit that.”

To celebrate 20 years of engineering refinement, Fisher & Paykel has collaborated with Wellington-based ceramicist Felicity Donaldson of Wundaire to create a handcrafted 20th Anniversary Dinner Set.

The Fisher & Paykel x Wundaire collaboration was inspired by the Wabi-Sabi trend of handmade pottery, which is centred around seeing the perfect in the imperfect. This is at juxtaposition with Fisher & Paykel’s 20 years of refinement towards a ‘perfected’ DishDrawer™.

No two pieces of the 7 place Wundaire dinner set are the same, with the handmade quality of the product being visible through the thumbprints of the ceramicist being observable in the finished product. “Just like Felicity’s beautiful ceramics, the Dishdrawer™ is designed for real people living real lives,” says Palmer.
