After years of critical acclaim and countless accolades, Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett, continues to stun audiences, this time as a jewellery thief in the all-female cast of Oceans 8. Blanchett sits down with MiNDFOOD to talk about her latest role.

Radiating sophistication, the highly accomplished Cate Blanchett is an unstoppable force. Blanchett’s long and respected career has spanned over 50 films and 20 theatre productions. Wearing many professional hats Blanchett still has time to be a mother to her four children with whom she raises with husband and esteemed playwright, Andrew Upton. Her most recent feature film sees her team up with an all-female cast in the latest “Ocean’s” installment.

We asked her what it was like working with a star-studded, all-female cast. “Everyone felt like they were at the top of their game. Nora [Awkwafina] has such incredible energy as does Rihanna, and Mindy [Kaling] is an extraordinary writer and problem solver and an amazing listener. Sandy [Sandra Bullock] and I have met previously, I’ve also met Annie [Hathaway] before, and I had worked with Sarah [Paulson], everyone else was new. So it was like the first day of school. But it was the best make-up truck I have ever been on in the morning. I loved it,” Blanchett laughs!

Ocean’s 8, is about an elaborate jewellery heist that goes wrong and then right. Blanchette says it is this that gives these movies their appeal – a plan that is slightly ridiculous and impossible, but comes together in the end. “Something always goes terribly wrong and the thrill of it is watching how they get themselves out of the heist and make it work. It takes different skill sets, and that’s why it was great to have different actors who offer such different energies and input,” says Blanchett.

Blanchett recalls her own first piece of jewellery (not stollen), a Cameo that her grandmother gave to her, that she still has and wears. “All my bits of jewellery are sentimental, not necessarily expensive.”

The movie opens in cinemas on June 6.
