Carolyn’s Workout Diary: Week 9 – Half way there

Carolyn’s Workout Diary: Week 9 – Half way there

In week nine of her fitness challenge, Carolyn weighs-in, find out how she did.

Carolyn’s Workout Diary: Week 9 – Half way there

A 5kg dumbbell weight is currently sitting pride of place on my desk at work. It represents how much weight I’ve lost on this journey at the nine-week mark. It’s also a reminder of the good work I’ve done and not to begin caving now and being tempted to eat bad stuff again.

There are still many months to go before I run a half marathon in November but in terms of the weight-loss goal that I set of losing 10kgs, I’m half way there.

When I weighed in this week at 69.5kgs Gaz Brown of GetRunning gave me a high five. Then after the weigh-in he got me to hold a 5kg cast iron plate. “That’s how much you’ve lost,” he said. I stared at him, open mouthed. “But it’s so heavy,” I exclaimed. Grinning, Gaz said “Now run across the room carrying it. That’s how much weight you were carrying nine weeks ago.” As I ran with the weight it dawned on me just how much I’d lost. It was a big wake up call.

I’ve done it by just keeping at it, and following the programme set by Gaz who has been keeping me honest with a food diary, as well as helping me get faster and stronger through the running clinic, circuit training and yoga.

No, I haven’t been perfect. I’ve fallen off the wagon a few times with wine and pizza. However, healthy, delicious salads now outweigh those moments by 5 out of 2 days a week. I’m striving to make that 6 to 1.

My training programme currently looks like this – yoga (Monday, 6pm), running clinic (Tuesday, 6am), strength circuit class (Wednesday, 6am), running clinic (Thursday, 6am), rest day (Friday), 40 minute run/walk (Saturday, when I choose) and rest day (Sunday).

I’m still not very bendy. I still run slowly, and I don’t pump the heaviest weights, but I’m improving every day.

This week I’ve spent a lot of time smiling at GetRunning because another personal highlight, aside from the weigh-in, was being able to do full sit-ups. I’ve never been able to do these before as they’ve always killed my back. My posture is also beginning to subtlely change too, thanks to a new found strength in my core and glutes.

During the writing of this week’s Workout Diary I’ve picked up the 5kg dumbbell on my desk several times. Not for the exercise but for the sheer thrill of it because every time I do it, it freaks me out at how heavy it is. Picking it up is a daily reminder of my goal, as well as a personal motivator to keep working at it.
