Caring for Your Skin Over the Festive Season
We find out how to keep skin glowing and healthy all summer long.

Christmas is just around the corner which tends to mean a chocka social calendar for most of us. And while we all want our skin to be healthy and glowing for the special occasions that come hand in hand with summer, a few too many late nights and festive season indulgence can start to show on our complexions.

We spoke with skin expert, Trilogy Product Research and Compliance Manager, Kerry De Villiers, to find out all the tips and tricks you need to know for caring for your skin over the festive season.

Is it too late to start prepping my skin for the festive season and summer months? What can I do to get it in tip-top condition?

Exfoliate! There’s no better way to quickly rid your face of tired skin to help it look and feel healthy and radiant for the festive season!

A consistent routine which includes regular exfoliation and effective hydration will help give you a beautiful healthy natural glow. Make-up sits better and lasts longer on well-hydrated skin – you’ll also need less of it if your skin is healthy and in good condition. And for an immediate fix, follow up your exfoliation with a mask packed with performance natural actives, like our Trilogy Mineral Radiance Mask, formulated to deeply cleanse the skin while working overtime to revitalise, energise and purify skin to leave a soft, smooth and radiant complexion.

If the festive season is already starting to show on my skin how can I counter some of these effects?

Our skin is one of our largest organs. Not an original phrase but it’s true, so it makes perfect sense that the vital nutrients we obtain from a fresh and healthy diet nourish our bodies (including the skin from the inside out), while a varied skincare regime will help nourish our skin topically.

Superfoods are a massive trend that have made their way to the beauty industry as they are packed with antioxidants and will give your skin and body that rejuvenating top up, perfect for the festive season.

What impact can sleep deprivation have on our skin?

It’s called beauty sleep for a reason! Our skin, like our entire body, has what is known as a circadian rhythm: a certain pattern of functioning over a 24-hour period. The body systematically replenishes itself while you sleep so the skin is at its most receptive to nourishing natural actives at night while the natural rejuvenation process occurs.

If you are burning the candle at both ends this can impact the skin’s natural process of restoration resulting in complexions looking dull and lacklustre and in turn can speed up the signs of ageing.

If you’re not getting a regular amount of sleep, add an overnight face mask to your reduced sleep routine. Overnight face masks are a great way to boost the skin’s natural process of rejuvenation which occurs while you sleep. Trilogy Age-Proof Overnight Mask treats the skin to a quickly absorbing formulation which works through the night to restore elasticity, hydration and suppleness to ensure skin wakes up looking firm, brightened and
refreshed.

Why is it so important to take off make-up at the end of the day?

Nighttime cleansing is essential for nutrients to absorb and nourish the skin. If you don’t cleanse your face before bed, not only do you leave on the grime from the day, clogging your pores, dulling the complexion and encouraging unwanted breakouts, you also miss out on essential skin nutrition.

Using a cleanser that’s right for your skin and that you enjoy using, with a beautiful texture and fragrance, will  take the chore out of cleansing. And once you see the improvement in your skin’s health and radiance, it will soon be as routine as cleaning your teeth!

I’ve got blemish-prone skin and the festive season really exacerbates my problems. Is there anything I can do to stop this happening?

Increased daily water intake combined with good cleansing habits is the aim of the game for blemish-prone skin during the festive season where late nights and overindulging become the norm! Water, water, water! Increasing your water intake or drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day will help rid the body and skin of toxins, help to keep skin hydrated, supple and with more of a radiant glow!

It is important to keep blemish-prone areas clean. The build-up of excess oil (sebum) and skin cells need to be removed to keep skin looking healthy and radiant – water alone cannot remove oil and debris. Wearing make-up only increases the need for effective cleansing! Twice a day is ideal, but the general rule is always to cleanse at night, even if you’re not wearing make-up. Otherwise, all the grime from the day just stays there, clogging your pores, dulling the complexion and encouraging unwanted breakouts.

If your cleaner is too harsh, it will disrupt the skin’s protective mantle, leading to a vicious cycle of oil overproduction and uncomfortable surface tautness. The right balance and blend of natural oils in your cleanser is not only beneficial, but it’s also essential for a healthy, balanced complexion. Look for a cleanser with a blend of pure plant oils and calming natural actives, such as Trilogy Very Gentle Cream Cleanser, to help re-balance your skin
appearance.

What are your go-to beauty tips for making tired skin look more awake?

1. Keep an eye cream with a cooling tip in your handbag to instantly refresh your party face…or better yet keep it in the fridge to totally cool and refresh your eye area en route to a party!

2. A Trilogy Hydrating Mist Toner helps set your make up and instantly hydrate your skin while the beautiful hints of rose, geranium and lavender soothe your sense…perfect right before or after a festive gathering.

3. Wear a mattifying facial SPF – you will be able to party a bit longer if your skin isn’t sizzled by the time Christmas lunch is actually ready.

4. Treat yourself to a face mask a week or two before the festivities begin – perhaps while you’re wrapping presents or baking Christmas treats!
