The Cardinal is facing multiple charges of historical sex offences and is the most senior Catholic official to front court on such serious charges. He has always strongly denied the accusations against him and said earlier this month, that he was looking forward to clearing his name.
“I’m looking forward finally for having my day in court,” he told reporters last month. “I’m innocent of these charges, they are false. The whole idea of sexual abuse is abhorrent to me.”
In June, Victoria Police announced Cardinal Pell is facing multiple charges in relation to multiple complainants. The cardinal has hired top Melbourne lawyer Robert Richter to lead his defence team.
