Captain Tom Moore shares a special message to supporters on his 100th birthday

Captain Tom Moore captured the hearts of people around the world when he launched his NHS fundraiser, walking 100 laps of his backyard before his 100th birthday.

Mr Moore’s initial goal was £1,000. Now, on the eve of his 100th birthday, the war veteran has managed to raise over £29 million.

He spoke to the BBC earlier this month about his astonishment on how many people the campaign had reached. “It’s almost unbelievable isn’t it?,” Moore told the BBC. “But when you think who it’s for, and they’re all so brave … I think they deserve every penny of it.”

“I think it’s absolutely fabulous,” Moore said. “I really am pleased to be doing this and serving our nurses and our doctors and all our people in our national health service.”

Since then, Moore has been honoured with a Pride of Britain award, had a train named after him and has become the oldest person to reach number one in the UK singles chart, with his cover of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’.

On his birthday, Moore will be celebrated with a special RAF flyover.

People around the world have shared their love for Moore. It’s clear he’s become a true national treasure for the UK, with over 125,000 birthday cards flooding in from the public.

Sharing his gratitude on Twitter, Moore thanked everyone for their outpouring of support.

“It is quite extraordinary that I am turning 100. It is even more extraordinary that I am doing so with this many well-wishers and I am in awe at the response my walking has had,” he writes.

“To everyone who has donated, sent birthday cards and messages, sincerely thank you. Please stay home, stay safe. Tomorrow Will Be A Good Day”.
