The Democrats have called for Donald Trump to be removed from office immediately, asking that Vice President Mike Pence invoke the 25th Amendment to the US Constitution.

The amendment allows the vice president to take over the presidency if the president dies, resigns, becomes incapacitated or is removed from office.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer issued a statement calling for Pence to remove the president by invoking the amendment.

They said that if the vice president and cabinet do not do so, Congress “may be prepared to move forward with impeachment”.

Pelosi issued the call while speaking at a media conference, saying the president had “incited an armed insurrection against America”.

“The gleeful desecration of the US Capitol and the violence targeting Congress are horrors that will forever stain our nation’s history, instigated by the president. That’s why it is such a stain,” she said.

“In calling for this seditious act, the president has committed an unspeakable assault on our nation and our people.

“I join the Senate Democratic leader in calling on the vice president to remove this president by immediately invoking the 25th Amendment.

“If the vice president and cabinet do not act, the Congress may be prepared to move forward with impeachment. That is the overwhelming sentiment of my caucus.”

In addition to calls from Democrats, some Republicans have also joined the chorus of voices asking that Trump be removed, including Representative Adam Kinzinger of Illinois and Governor Larry Hogan of Maryland.

Seventeen Democratic members of the House Judiciary Committee signed a letter sent to Pence calling for him to invoke the 25th Amendment, and a growing number of civic and business leaders are also releasing statements calling for the president’s removal.
