Brown for summer? In our head it doesn’t make sense.
The season of sun and socialising invites dressing in colourful, upbeat hues, surely?
Of course, there’s no rules about what to wear when, but brown is seriously making its mark right now.
That’s based on a new wave of offerings from top designers and the influential style figures leading the way. Both are embracing chic and minimalist, but relaxed, looks in every shade of brown, from milk chocolate to sienna.
If you want to be center of attention, by all means, choose a red dress and you’ll still be bang on trend. But there’s something about the quiet luxury of brown that is not trying too hard.
It has an earthiness that turns us away from our very-online lives, reminding us of switching off and becoming one with nature again. It also won’t steal the attention away from the bride or guest of honour at a party, and at the end of the night, won’t show stains.
Brown works well with denim and other colours – consider it a neutral like black, grey or white. It also styles well with a range of accessories from gold or silver jewellery, to white, black or tan bags and shoes, which makes it easy to fit in to an existing wardrobe.
Local designers are overflowing with chocolate and coffee hues, perhaps spurred on by international designers like Miu Miu, Ralph Lauren, Khaite, Bottega Veneta and more, that have used the colour in key pieces through until mid-next year. That, and the fact it’s a cosy colour for the northern hemisphere’s winter that works right now in leather, cashmere and coats.
Down Under, we particularly love the dresses that abound in linen, easy to wear when it’s sweltering, and silky slip numbers that elevate your look, perfect for dinner or cocktails.
If you want a signature piece that will last, go for a luxury handbag in a rich, burnished brown.
