Her father, James Spears, was granted conservatorship in 2008 after she suffered several mental health crises.
Despite the 38-year-old singer’s lawyer’s claim that Spears is afraid of her father and will not resume her career while he is in control, the judge declined to suspend James Spears’ conservator role.
The court, however, did approve the request from the singer to appoint the Bessemer Trust, an independent office, to serve as co-conservator.
In his conservatorship role, James Spears is given control over his daughter’s personal and financial affairs. This includes being able to restrict visitors and be in communication with doctors around her treatment.
The singer’s lawyer says she has grown increasingly frustrated with her father, claiming that the two have not spoken in a very long time.
James Spears’ legal team said his “sole motivation has been his unconditional love for his daughter and a fierce desire to protect her from those trying to take advantage of her.”
The messy legal battle between the father and daughter has been going on for quite some time, with the singer’s mother describing their relationship as “toxic”. Lately, fans have taken to social media to in support of the singer, launching the ‘Free Britney’ movement.
Despite the ruling, the judge did state she would consider any future requests from the singer’s lawyer to suspend or remove her father from his conservatorship role.
