BREAKING: NZ will move to alert level 3 in one week

After a cabinet meeting this morning, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced New Zealand will move out of alert level 4.

The country will move down to alert level 3 on 11.59pm on Monday 27 April. The country will be on hold at level 3 for 2 weeks before being reviewed again.

“We have done what very few countries have been able to do. We have stopped the wave of transmission,” says Ardern.

Waiting a week “gives us more long term health and economic returns down the track,” she says. “We have taken a balanced approach, one the Director-General of Health recommended.”

Ahead of the move to level 3, businesses will be able to get ready to open, such as employees returning to restock. Schools will also be able to prepare before opening on 29 April.

Ardern reminds that under level 3, Kiwis should still stay at home. “It does not allow more social activity,” she says.

“Please, stay strong, stay home, be kind and let’s finish what we started.”

What are the rules under alert level 3?

The principle of alert level 3, Ardern stated last week, is to restrict contact with each other. Ardern likened level 3 to a “waiting room” where we must primarily stay at home if possible.

Level 3 comes with “extra risk and a high level of trust and responsibility. The more distance the better,” says Ardern. She recommends people keeping a note of where they have been and who they have been in contact with.

Some of the changes include businesses restaurants re-opening for takeaway only, schools re-opening and recreation guidelines broadened to allow swimming and surfing.
