BREAKING: New Zealand to move to alert level 1 from midnight

Following the announcement today of zero active cases of COVID-19 in New Zealand, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says the country will be moving to alert level one from midnight tonight.

“Today, 75 days later, we are ready. Cabinet has agreed, we will now move to level one,” she said. “To get our economy moving again, we will start almost immediately.”

The country will move down to alert level 1 as of 11.59pm on Monday 8 June.

“The challenge of Covid remains around the world and so it remains here. We are not immune to what is happening to the rest of the world,” she continued. “We will almost certainly see cases here again. That is not a sign we have failed, it is a reality of this virus.”

Ardern pointed to the economic benefits level one brings. “We become one of the most open economies in the world,” she said. At level one, she says, the economy is expected to be operating at 3.8% below normal levels, compared to 37% under level 4.

“Let’s make our next goal supporting our recovery right across the economy,” finished Ardern. “Our collective results speak for themselves. Moving to level one is the dividend for everyone’s hard work for now.”

“Unite for recovery. I encourage you to buy, play and experience New Zealand made to get our country moving again.”

“There is no denying this is a milestone. Thank you, New Zealand.”

Under level 1, borders remain closed and border quarantine will continue. Contact tracing via QR codes are also encouraged, though no longer a requirement.
