Taking to Twitter, Johnson thanked the NHS staff for saving his life after spending a week in hospital and three days in ICU.
“It’s hard for words to express my debt,” he said.
Thanking the doctors, nurses and NHS staff for their “astonishing” care, Mr Johnson shared his special gratitude for Jenny, a nurse from Invercargill, New Zealand, who, along with another nurse, stood by his bedside for at his most critical time.
“If I mentioned in particular, two nurses who stood by my bedside for 48 hrs when things could have gone either way,” thanked Mr Johnson. “For every second of the night, they were watching and they were thinking and caring and making the interventions I needed.”
The Prime Minister finished by thanking the entire NHS workers, saying “It is thanks to that courage, that devotion, that duty and that love that our NHS has been unbeatable.”
Mr Johnson will be continuing his recovery at his country home, and on the advice of the medical team, will not immediately be returning to work.
It is hard to find the words to express my debt to the NHS for saving my life.
The efforts of millions of people across this country to stay home are worth it. Together we will overcome this challenge, as we have overcome so many challenges in the past. #StayHomeSaveLives pic.twitter.com/HK7Ch8BMB5
