Boris Johnson admitted to hospital over coronavirus

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been admitted to hospital after testing positive for COVID-19 over a week ago.

A spokeswoman says the PM has been admitted for tests, as he “continues to have persistent symptoms of coronavirus.”

It is being taken as a “precautionary step” on the advice of his doctor. He is expected to stay in hospital overnight.

While in hospital, the prime minister will remain in charge of the government.

The spokeswoman says Johnson “thanks NHS staff for all their incredible hard work” and urges the public to follow the government’s advice to “stay at home, protect the NHS and save lives.”

At the time of his announcement of testing positive for the virus, Johnson said he was self-isolating but “will continue to lead the government’s response via video-conference as we fight this virus.”

Johnsons fiance Carrie Symonds, who is pregnant with their first child, has not yet been tested but says she has been in bed with symptoms of the virus.

“I haven’t needed to be tested and, after seven days of rest, I feel stronger and I’m on the mend,” she said on Twitter. “Being pregnant with COVID-19 is obviously worrying. To other pregnant women, please do read and follow the most up to date guidance which I found to be…reassuring.”
